The genius myth and women in STEM
You don´t need to be a genius to become an engineer!
Women are still underrepresented in many STEM fields, like mathematics, physics, engineering and ICT. Scientific literature tells us that more female referents are needed, but also that this is due to the “genius myth”.
What is the genius myth? The false belief that exceptional talent is needed to study and work in engineering and other STEM fields. Here we try to explain how this “genius myth” works, and what we can do to address it.

Myth: Girls are less skilled in math and science.
Reality: Scientific research shows no inherent gender differences in math ability. Performance gaps are the result of cultural stereotypes and societal prejudices.
Myth: Girls don’t like STEM careers.
Reality: Girls are naturally interested in science from a young age. This interest is then diminished by cultural influences, lack of role models, and systemic barriers in the workplace.
